The first stamps of independent Zambia were issued on October 24, 1964, marking the nation's independence. This inaugural issue included a set of three commemorative stamps and a series of 14 definitive stamps featuring various professions, scenes, and national symbols designed by Gabriel Ellison.

Significance: Independence commemoratives and new definitives, replacing those of Northern Rhodesia/Rhodesia & Nyasaland.

Designer: Many early Zambian stamps, including the initial issues, were designed by Gabriel Ellison, who also designed the Zambian flag and coat of arms.

Earlier Postal History: Before 1964, the region used British South Africa Company stamps (from 1890), followed by Northern Rhodesia, and the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

Zimbabwe

The first postage stamps explicitly bearing the name "Zimbabwe" were issued on April 18, 1980, marking the country's independence.

Issue Date: April 18, 1980.

Significance: Issued immediately upon independence from Rhodesia to mark the new nationhood.

Designs: Included representations of the new Zimbabwean flag, the Zimbabwe Bird, and scenes representing national unity.
